DISABILITY AND INCLUSION.

I like Caroline Casey. I would go as far to say that Caroline is a National Treasure. If you wish to know why, then I advise you to watch the video below in which Caroline presents herself more eloquently than I could ever attempt.

I've been fortunate enough to meet Caroline on a few occasions and on each , she has wowed and transfixed her audience with stirring speeches, always focused on the positive. No self pity or limits! Just a focus on the point that every person, no matter what the obstacles, needs to strive to be the very best that they can be.
Through her Kanchi Network, Caroline strives to change mindsets, attitudes and behaviours around the subject of disability. Kanchi works with decision makers and business leaders to promote the disability business case through unique ,innovative and effective business initiatives.
At a recent meeting attended by leaders from the very top of the Irish corporate world, Caroline rationalised that with one billion people worldwide and a very identifiable spend of billions of euro annually, the question as to why a business would be disability inclusive is totally nullified by the question as to why not!
Disabled consumers buy services and buy goods. It has nothing to do with pity or sensitivity! It just make commercial sense to be disability inclusive as a business.
Almost every day we read in the newspaper (especially in the run up to austerity budgets) of the life of carers. How a trip to the supermarket presents huge challenges for for them! Something that trivial! How daunting must a trip to a tyre depot be?
Whilst many businesses have changed their ways, I once worked with a national company who for example, could not see the sense of the argument for providing a no charge call out fee to wheelchair users! Despite the obvious commercial sense of doing so! Wheelchair bound consumers have to be more quality and safety conscious where their vehicles are concerned so going back to the original point, Why wouldn't you?

At Heffernan Tyres, we are not short sighted. we see the benefit of inclusion where disability is concerned. Yes, we have a sense of community and corporate responsibility but also Yes, because the families and members of the greater disability community are valuable customers.
We have full wheelchair access and parking. Restrooms and a comfortable waiting area with free wi fi. Our waiting area is always spotless and we provide complimentary tea, coffee,TV,games and toys for the kids. We try to make the purchasing experience as comfortable for everyone as we possibly can. That's what inclusion in business is all about.

And then there is our staff. A professional, patient and friendly team who always strive to be the best at what they do and do us proud as a company in the Kildare and greater Leinster community. We are open for business to anyone and provide the facilities for that. We look forward to welcoming you to our business.

RUSH

It is with great excitement that we await the cinema  release of Ron Howard's new epic film, RUSH. Anyone growing up in 70's will remember when BBC's Grand Prix programme on Sunday nights was the ultimate Television event. A topic of discussion on Monday mornings as we made our way to school on grey damp days; Grand Prix was more than just a race programme. With the familiar bass progression lines of Fleetwood Macs' Chain the viewer was transported to a world of glamour, fast cars, beautiful women, French cigarettes, Martinis, danger and fierce rivalries.
It was a real life soap opera and it's subjects were as far removed from suburban Ireland as the later Dallas and Dynasties of the 80's. Except this was real.

Central to the drama was the rivalry between two champions; Britain's James Hunt and Austria's Nkki Lauda. This is the inspiration and central theme for RUSH and with a decent line up of actors the film has already received excellent reviews.

James Hunt played by Chris Hemsworth and Niki Lauda played by  Daniel BrĂ¼h
Certainly, nostalgia plays a part in making these times look more exciting than the present day but there are other factors.
There were terrible accidents, fatalities and pile ups. The absence of video recorders, Internet, etc. made BBC Grand Prix an event which if missed, was missed for good. There was real racing, lead changes and eccentric behaviour. Hunt punched a Marshall on one occasion for helping him from his crashed car. However nostalgia aside, there can be little doubt that for some years F1 lost it's way. It became almost predictable, boring and uncompetitive
As we have written on here before, with the improvement of tyre strategy in partnership with Pirelli, F1 is well and truly back in business as an exciting event.

Senna was a Documentary film which provided an insight into F1 in the 80's and 90's , RUSH is a dramatisation of F1 in the 70's. Howard has used excellent cinematography to bring the excitement of F1 to life. If there was an extra sense or feature to be brought to the film, it would be to add the smell of burning rubber to the cinema. It opens in Ireland today Friday 13th September. Enjoy!

IMPOSSIBLY BEAUTIFUL!

Ask any Kildare Town native which building in town they are most proud of and you'll get one answer.
St Brigid's Cathedral!
Dating from the 13th Century and located in the centre of the town, St Brigids confirms Kildare Town as a classic example of a Medieval historical town. Both inside and out it is a beautiful building and is steeped in history. The original church on the site was founded around 480AD by the Kildare Patron Saint herself and through the centuries was a magnet to scholars and invaders alike. Vikings, Normans, and English all came through at some point in time but thankfully we have been left with a beautiful Cathedral in our town.

A major tourist drawcard to the town of Kildare, St Brigid's is also of great community importance to the people of Kildare. As well as Church of Ireland service on Sundays, the Cathedral welcomes visitors to it's grounds and interior. The Cathedral is also used to stage concerts on occasion. We have hosted Eimearr Quinn, Brian Kennedy, Colm Wilkinson and The Celtic Tenors at well organised Christmas events over the years. The acoustics of the building and the ambience of the the interior provide a special atmosphere and these nights have been a huge success.

It is with great excitement that on 15/9/13 we welcome the genius that is Jullie Feeney to Kildare. A Galwegian by origin, Julie Feeney has been described by Hot Press as ''An eccentric pop genius..intricate, articulate...draws on centuries of history as a source''. With Irish Times Album of the Year award for ''Clocks'' in 2012, there is no end to the accolades and recognition that this fine artist has earned. Her style of music and artistic performance will match well with the cathedral and this will be a memorable night in Kildare Town. It will be the highlight of Kildare's contribution to the 2013 ''Gathering''.
Locals and visitors are all welcome for this fantastic event. Tickets are available on Julies website  or through the Landmark Theatre in Newbridge, Co Kildare.
Heffernan Tyres will be well represented at the event and we look forward to meeting friends old and new on the night.
Here is a clip of Julie Feeney on RTE's Late Late Show singing a song which could be dedicated to our beautiful Cathedral. Impossibly Beautiful! Enjoy!

SAYING MASS FOR FATHER DOUGAL.

In Speed, the hilarious episode of Father Ted where Dougal is stuck on a 5 mph out of control milk float, the priests have to Brainstorm to find a solution. They try saying mass from a truck and return to brainstorm again. After much deliberation they argue if ''there is anything to be said for saying another mass?''.
The series was as farcical as it was funny and was a huge international success.
A friend recently mentioned the episode to me in a business context. He was telling me of a company he had worked for where they never seemed to learn from their mistakes and spent much of their time talking about what to do, ignoring what went wrong (as that would mean taking responsibility) and then after much deliberation, returning to making the same identical mistakes.
I thought the analogy was both powerful and funny. Anyone who has worked in large corporations which have either temporarily or long term lost their way, will have seen this behaviour. It is a significant reason why these ships are so so slow to turn while the guy in the dingy has changed direction and is miles ahead in the opposite direction.

At Heffernan Tyres we have built a business model that works. It is as a result of hard work, good planning and a highly professional team that we maintain that model. We monitor our results carefully. We understand that if you are not making mistakes, then you are not doing very much. We take responsibility, We tweak, We change, We stop doing if required. We do something else! But we never keep doing the wrong thing over and over again. And we get Dougal off the Milk Float quicker!

GUNK!

GUNK!

TYPICAL TYRE SEALANT KIT AS TESTED ON RTE1 CONSUMER SHOW.

Being the tyre nerds that we are at Heffernan Tyres, we are inclined to prick up our ears anytime the subject is mentioned in the media. So when a recent episode of The Consumer Show on RTE1 featured a test on Tyre Sealant Kits, we were all ears. We have had our own view on the subject for many years so it was interesting to watch and see if the same conclusions as ours were reached.

In principle the idea of these kits is a sound one. They reduce the weight of the vehicle saving fuel and create extra space in lieu of a spare. All sounds good so far.
This excellently produced video by Continental Tyre Group also emphasises the safety benefits and simplicity of their Conti Comfort Kit which is one of the best on the market.

Still sounds good and this presentation certainly made it look easy.
However on The Consumer Show, the testers were made to practise the use of three such kits for their ease of use, etc. The results were near amusing, with the team ( a mix of men and women) struggling to get their kits to work in a typical puncture situation. Most of us are drilled in changing spares on our cars so in a typical breakdown we are not likely to panic or lose concentration. Trying to put something like what was tested together on a rainy night on the roadside = flap = danger. So no one was sold on the simplicity or safety aspect. Also in the video above ''85% of punctures are repairable''. Eh! No! UK maybe but on our potholed narrow roads, no! So in  situations where your tyre is unrepairable you're faced with one option, tow.
Finally as part of their review, the show asked a number of car dealers if they carried a spare on their car. The only answer was an emphatic yes.

We were pleased to find that there was a fairly broad consensus reached on the show and that it pretty well concurred with our view here at Heffernan Tyres. We have covered the subject of Runflat tyres on here before and it is our considered opinion, that in the Irish market, runflats are the only exception where you should drive a vehicle without a spare. It was good to see that others agreed with us.

DOWN ON THE FARM.

As discussed previously on this Blog, we are somewhat spoilt for choice here in Kildare when it comes to shopping, leisure and amenities. Many of our attractions are of national or even world importance so it's hardly surprising that we get a lot of visitors and that the town prospers somewhat as a result.
One attraction which is fast becoming a magnet for Kildare is Kildare Farm Foods. Located just five minutes from the town centre, Kildare Farm Foods is a highly innovative business which offers more than just food shopping. Owner David Sexton has created a conceptual shopping experience for the food lover which makes shopping a sheer pleasure. The store itself has a pleasant buzz about it. Neat, well stacked shelves with the finest food produce are the order of the day. The wood panelled walls and rows of glass fronted refrigerators give it a bright, airy and clean ambience. It is almost always busy but not chaotic.

The finest farm produce including Beef, Poultry, Veg and Dairy products are all on display and the remarkable value for money is surely one of the main draw cards to the farm. However it is the added extras that set Kildare Farm Foods apart from main food retailers. A lovely cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating, serving world acclaimed Java Roast Coffee is a nice touch. But the piece de resistance is the Open Farm which is situated at the rear of the building. A safe walkway takes you through the large enclosures housing a mix of farm and exotic animals. Turkeys, Geese, Fowl, Alpacas, Minature Pigs and a recently added pair of Ostrich make great entertainment for visiting families. It's a great way to make a shopping trip a pleasant experience for the kids.
Like all great marketeers, David Sexton has the customer at the centre of his plans and there are lots of new plans in the pipeline for the farm.

Kildare town is not light on retail competition. For a small town we have quite a choice. Aldi, Lidi, Tesco and Eurospar all have sizeable outlets right in the middle of the town. This has not prevented Kildare Farm Foods from proving what we know here at Heffernan Tyres. If you are the best at what you do, people will come and buy from you. Again and again!

GOVERNMENT FAILS TO TACKLE PART WORN COWBOYS!

It was with great disappointment that we learnt last week that the government has sold legitimate tyre retailers down the Swanee yet again!
The Government's''Closing the Gap'' strategy was hoped to be the tyre industry's biggest chance to see meaningful legislation brought forward to ban the importation and sale of part worn tyres in Ireland.
Instead the Government has opted to kick the can down the road. This decision comes despite warnings regarding safety, VAT evasion and the threat to jobs in legitimate retailers.
It beggars belief that such warnings have seemingly been ignored. The Department of Transport has let us down. However we must not give up.
Perhaps a different angle and approach may yield positive results for us.
Surely there must be something that can be done at a European level to stop the transportation of what is effectively environmentally hazardous waste? Adjunct to that, there is probably an angle regarding consumer rights here. If a consumer is being asked to pay a fee for ''environmental disposal''every time a tyre is removed, then surely the he/she is entitled to have that service supplied. Tyres which are removed, sold on again and removed at the end of their ''second life'' are having the so called ''disposal'' fee applied twice.

At Heffernan tyres we welcome our customers to check our environmental credentials. All of our removed tyres are sent to Crumb Rubber where they are recycled for use in playground surfaces, equestrian centres, etc. We will continue through our presence on the board of ITIA (Irish Tyre Industry Association) to lobby for change in the trade of second hand tyres in Ireland. That is our commitment to environment and safety.

''THEY'RE BLACK AND ROUND''!

That's the explanation I heard from a tyre salesman one day (in a retailer who shall remain nameless) when asked by a customer if a budget tyre on offer was worth spending money on. Well before I explain why the tyre salesman in question was not very good at his job, let me say that the question the customer asked is totally justifiable. They all look the same and the price gap between Premium tyres and Budget is often so great that it is worth finding out more.
So is it worth the extra investment to spend up on premium tyres?

In a one word answer, Yes! In a two word explanation, Research and Development.
The overwhelming differences between premium brand Tyres (such as the brands pictured above) and their lesser known budget brand counterparts is research and development. Two tyres may look similar at first glance. Black, round, grooves patterns around the outside, etc. But! There is considerably more to those grooves than the everyday consumer might think. Months, even years of testing may go into the tread design of a premium tyre. The angle and size of the sipes (lateral grooves) as well as the compounds used in the manufacturing process can have huge influences on the performance of the tyre where water clearance and grip are concerned. Premium  brand tyre companies invest hugely in R&D and will only patent and release a new tread pattern after the tyre has been rigorously tested in conditions that resemble the worst driving conditions the average motorist is likely to encounter. Budget tyre companies tend to copy the premium brands tread patterns, adjust them slightly to avoid patent litigation and release the tyre on the market without any significant testing. In countries like Ireland where it rains heavily so often the risks involved in using budget tyres is significant. This video produced by German manufacture Continental shows beyond doubt that there is a significant safety risk associated with the fitment of budget tyres.

At Heffernan Tyres, we have fifty years experience of providing all brands of tyres to the market. We know what works and what doesn't. We have mileage data on our database which provides us with performance information on many brands of tyre. We determine our range of tyres on a combination of measurements which guarantees our customers receive the best advice and value for money available. We understand that people need to be conscious of what they spend but our staff also have the expertise to explain the safety advantages of fitting quality tyres to your vehicle. You will never get the ''Black and Round'' answer at Heffernan Tyres. We're good at what we do.

TYRE STRATEGY A WINNER FOR ALONSO AND PIRELLI

Anyone watching the Chinese F1 Grand Prix last week will know beyond doubt that tyre strategy played a critically important role in determining which drivers took the podium spots. The decision of starting on soft tyres and pitting early with a three  pit strategy won places 1,2 and 3 for Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton respectively. World champion Vettel was left to rue starting on medium compound and leaving his change to soft until his last pit stop. Despite a frantic challenge for third in the final laps and the fastest pit stops, team Red Bull missed out on a podium with Vettel having to settle for fourth. His team mate Mark Webber crashed out and said of the secret of winning races in the modern age to be  ''tyres, tyres, tyres. tyres, and tyres''

For the fans of F1 there is no doubt that tyres have added huge excitement and unpredictability to the sport, Races have become much more competitive. There are more lead changes, overtakes, closer races, closer championships to keep us engaged, BBC's Eddie Jordan summed it up perfectly on Sunday ''What Pirelli have served up today is excitement and unpredictability'' And that's what it should be about.

When Pirelli took over as the sole supplier of F1 tyres in 2010 many thought that whilst they would run the show well technically, the marketing and branding that Bridgestone had provided would be a hard act to follow. What Pirelli have delivered through their compound and colour coding is a huge boost to their brand and its recognition at consumer level. As the fan or viewer watches the race and notes the driver's tyre strategy he or she is also watching the brand Perelli P ZERO. It's hard to think that they could have done it any better. No doubt it has been a huge investment for them. It would be a great story if a resulting significantly greater market share in the passenger tyre market is achieved in time.

Here at HeffernanTyres, we have been one of Ireland's biggest stockist of Pirelli tyres for many years. We have an excellent relationship with the company and stand firmly behind the quality of their products. We look forward to another exciting year of F1 and many more years of success with the Pirelli brand.

MICHELIN GOING THE EXTRA MILE THIS SPRING.

In our some of our previous posts we wrote about the great strides that are being made in the chemical engineering of tyres and how there are significant savings to be made on fuel consumption by choosing the right tyre for your car.

Well it probably comes as no surprise that Michelin have been very involved in the race to make the ''perfect tyre'' for a long time. Michelin invented the radial tyre, the single piece inflatable tyre, the runflat tyre, and numerous other innovations. Energy or fuel saving tyres have been part of the Michelin portfolio of products for over ten years and have prove time and again to cut fuel consumption through reduced rolling resistance.

Until the end of May Michelin are going the extra mile to save you on your fuel bills.
Just buy two or more Michelin Tyres from Heffernan Tyres and Michelin will send you fuel voucher for up to €50!!!!!. No tricks or gimmicks, just a genuine offer. Combined with never seen before prices on key sizes, this deal puts arguably the market's finest tyre on your vehicle for a seriously competitive price. Values of vouchers depend on the rim size on your vehicle. Phone us today on 045 521253 for a quote. TYRES. AN IRISH INVENTION?

JOHN BOYD DUNLOP (1840-1921)

Although his face is featured on the Northern Banks £10 note; John Boyd Dunlop was born in Scotland. After graduating from Veterinary College he took up practice in Ulster in 1867 and it was there that he designed his greatest invention. Whilst watching his son cycling uncomfortably on the cobbled streets of Belfast on solid tyres, he surmised that if the the rims were cushioned by air, the impact on the cyclist would be reduced.
The experiments conducted in America by Charles Goodyear in the 1820s had produced the process of Vulcanisation. This invention greatly improved the elasticity and strenght of rubber. Dunlop was able to prototype the worlds first pneumatic or inflatable rubber tyre.
The success Dunlop's innovation was proven in 1889 when a bicycle fitted with his tyres ridden by Willie Hume won all the races at Queens College Belfast Sports event. The pneumatic tyre was up and running.

Although initially granted a patent, Dunlop has his patent revoked when it was made known that another Scot, Robert Thompson, had patented a pneumatic tyre(Dunlop was unaware of this) in France and  the USA in 1844. Unable to get the right materials at the time, Thompson had not taken the idea to commercial production. Dunlop had already begun production in 1890 and the resulting legal battle saw him sell the patent and company to William Harvey du Cros MP in return for 1500 shares in the company that bore his name.
He never made a huge fortune from an invention nearly as significant as the wheel itself. He retired to Dublin and died in 1821. John Boyd Dunlop is buried in Deans Grange cemetery in Dublin.

Dunlop has become a leading brand in the world market and has been responsible for many innovations since 1890. They also manufacture a wide range of sportswear and equipment. In Ireland Dunlop was a significant employer and manufacturer until 1983.
In 1999 Dunlop was absorbed in to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to form the new trading name Goodyear Dunlop. Ironically a giant company was formed bearing the names of two geniuses who never owned the companies that their inventions created.

Here at Heffernan Tyres we have a long standing relationship with Goodyear Dunlop and stock a full range of their products. Their warehouse facility in Dublin and Internet portal for ordering tyres makes doing business with them an easy process. Nearly 100 years after the death of John  Boyd Dunlop; close friend of Queen Victoria and brilliant inventor; the product which bears his name is to be found on the shelves of businesses in the country where he invented it.

OUR SMALL PART IN THE GOOD FOOD CHAIN

Despite difficult times in many sectors, one area of Ireland's economy is bucking the trend and performing better than ever. Our farming sector is ploughing Ireland's way to recovery. And with  the world's population ever growing; the pressure on food production and ''good food'' production in particular will be with us  to stay. Worldwide there has been a huge move from processed mass produced foods to quality fresh produce and Ireland stands to gain considerably from this. Why? Well because quality food is what we do here. With ample water supplies, good fertile soils and temperate climate, Ireland produces some of the worlds finest food produce.

Kildare is a particularly fertile and productive county. In our immediate area we produce some of the worlds finest beef and lamb. Rapeseed is grown for oil production. Wheat, potatoes and arable crops of all kinds thrive in our limestone rich soils. Our proximity in relation to the capital and port is a significant advantage for Kildare also. Our farms and farmers are busy and productive.

So where do Heffernan Tyres fit in? For over 50 years our business has been closely associated with local primary producers. The modern farmer utilises all up to date technology and machinery to maximise his/her performance and production. Tyres and good tyre advice are all important to keep Tractors, Harvesters and implements on the move. Heffernan tyres in close collaboration with Firestone Agri are providing excellent quality tyre products, technical advice and service back up for Agri Businesses throughout the province.
For instance in the area of pressure maintainance and calculation, our local farmers are using a smart phone App from Firestone to get maximum performance from their tyres. Pressures are all important to minimise fuel usage and provide the right traction in variable conditions. Our staff are well trained and operate on farms via our mobile service which is 24/7 all year round.

We like good news stories at Heffernan Tyres. Positive news which indicates that the country is moving forward are welcome here. Our local farmers are part of that good news story. Long may it continue. We will be right there with them.

HEFFERNAN TYRES. PART OF A GREAT COMMUNITY!

ST. BRIGIDS ON ST PATRICKS NIGHT

As we have written here before; Kildare is a thriving community of people who genuinely love and feel proud of their town. There is always something going on, in the planning or the imagination of people who want to make things happen. Heffernan Tyres are proudly , smack bang in the middle of it all.
In 2013 we have  renewed our sponsorship with the the Cill Dara Rugby club and recently kitted out the U13s in Kildare AFC soccer club. There is some great budding talent there and we are so happy to be associated with the lads over there.

KILDARE AFC U13 LADS IN THEIR NEW KIT.

Local Arts Community Culture Kildare (LARK) was set up 6 years ago to showcase the talents of people from Kildare Town. The group has embarked on Musicals, Christmas Variety shows, Street Pageants and Photographic Exhibitions; with great community spirit. previous productions have included a staging of the musical  ANNIE last year which was a major success. However, starting tonight (Mar 19th) at the Moat Theatre Naas, LARK will stage it's most adventurous production to date. An extravaganza of film backdrop, lighting, special effects and of course song and dance has been months in preparation. Our CEO Thomas has been in the thick of it as Chairman and when the curtain closes tonight (19th March) on the Wizard of OZ, we expect a collective sigh of relief and a smile of satisfaction that a job has been well done. Because that's how we do in things in Kildare.
Best of luck to all the production team and cast for tonight and the week ahead. We look forward to reading the reviews and hearing the applause.

MOAT THEATRE NAAS TONIGHT TUESDAY 19th MARCH THROUGH TO SATURDAY 23rd MARCH.

And so as 2013 progresses, Heffernan Tyres remains at the centre of our local community in Kildare. We know that putting back is all important where relationships with our loyal customers are concerned. But mostly it's about community building, friendship and making our town and County a great place to live in.
Come out and visit us. We're sure you'll agree.
